COMMUNITY-INFORMED DESIGN

COLLABORATIVe DESIGN PROCESS

Through multiple community engagement sessions, we engaged students, faculty and staff, who shared thoughts with us about comfort and ideals for their educational environment. Many expressed the need for collaboration spaces between staff, faculty and students, and the importance of bringing ideas together by providing open spaces. Collaboration with the MCC community from the inception of the project supports our shared mission of creating an ‘inclusive and welcoming environment’.

SUSTAINABILITY

UPGRADES FOR A BETTER FUTURE

To support one of MCC’s core values of sustainability, the efforts of this project will ensure that an estimated 20 percent of the Brockton Campus buildings are sustainable and energy efficient, while utilizing existing buildings to reach these goals. Accomplishing this goal will help MCC’s buildings reach current code requirements, while more efficiently utilizing the square footage of their buildings for longevity of usable space.

UNIVERSAL DESIGN

DESIGN TO MEET THE NEEDS OF EVERYONE

Studio Luz is committed to Universal Design as a comprehensive strategy to create inclusive spaces that cater to the needs of everyone while being welcoming and functional. Our approach focuses on equity, ensuring that all individuals can interact with our projects without encountering any unnecessary barriers. We prioritize flexibility and comfort, resulting in supportive spaces that accommodate individuals of all identities and abilities.

ABOUT THE RENOVATION

AT MASSASOIT COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Founded in 1966 on the ancestral land of multiple groups of Indigenous peoples, Massasoit Community College was named for the Great Sachem of the Wampanoag Nation. It was one of twelve community colleges established on the basis that Massachusetts needed a more affordable, state-supported option for collegiate education. Today, MCC is a “dynamic, diverse learning community that supports all students in their education”, wherever they may be in their educational journey.

Studio Luz, as leaders in Community Engagement, partnered with Jones Architecture and DCAMM to create a wayfinding system, collaboration spaces, and an improved public realm for Massasoit’s Science and Allied Health programs.

Per their Statement of Values, MCC is committed to Student Success, Access and Affordability, Diversity and Inclusion, Academic Excellence, the surrounding Community, and Sustainability. Studio Luz Architects strives to support these missions, as well as students, faculty, and staff, through implementing Universal Design strategies to improve the built environment of Massasoit Community College.
