Open Floor Plan

ANGLING SPACES, VERTIVAL DIVISION

The challenge of opening up the floor layout was achieved through the angled spaces to create more connection from one room to another. The home is vertically divided into more private upper levels and more open spaces at the ground level.

Responsive to the Landscape

Windows for Light and View

The lower level features large windows open to the street and modern white walls. The wooden screen on the upper levels displays a different language, opening up the repetitive cladding to reveal views to the East and West.

Rain Screen Cladding System

Weather Protection, Energy Saving

The rain screen cladding system both increases weather protection, and lowers energy consumption of the home.

About the Single Family Residence

In Brighton

The Dustin Residence is a renovation of a single family home in Brighton, MA. The challenge for this renovation was to create a more open flow throughout the home from an existing closed traditional layout. This was achieved through the angling of spaces to create more connection from one room to another. The home is vertically divided into more private upper levels and more open spaces at the ground level. This is reflected not only in the space planning, but also in the exterior facade. The lower level features large windows open to the street and modern white walls. The wooden screen on the upper levels displays a different language, opening up the repetitive cladding to reveal views to the East and West. The rain screen cladding system both increases weather protection, and lowers energy consumption of the home. The third story becomes a separate master suite, allowing the second floor to accommodate an art loft. An ancillary space on the side houses a sauna and steam room, and creates a space for an outdoor dining courtyard.
